Fàilte gu Alba! Our Road Trip Through Scotland

Fàilte gu Alba! That’s how a Scotsman would greet you in Scottish Gaelic. For a long time, Max and I desired to visit this magical country and home of Nessie. That it would turn out to be January that we would visit… I don’t know whose idea that was… oh wait, it was mine! Ah! Luckily, in some regions of the country, it was much warmer than it was in Germany, so all good. But during our one-week-road-trip through Scotland, we still had to fight with any kind of weather you could imagine.

We had fog and rain and show and closed streets thanks to heavy snowing and all that while driving on the “wrong” side of the road. It was not easy from time to time but we managed and when the sun turned up after all, it was magical and everything seemed to be glistening. But also in the fog, this country is marvelous and I am not sure if I didn’t prefer it in that kind of magical mist and rain. In Scotland, this is wonderful, even though I usually hate fog and rain, haha…

Breathtaking Scottish nature

During our road trip, we saw snow-covered mountains, wild rivers and brooks that were floating over big rocks until they turned into massive waterfalls. We saw birds of prey that flew over cliffs of green that surrounded endless beaches and so much more. Scotland is one if the most beautiful countries we have every visited, that is for sure. Everything about this country is simply breathtaking and marvelous and that is the truth!

And our favorite region in Scotland? Definitely Glen Coe! It is where “Skyfall”, that James Bond movie, was filmed and no wonder! In Glen Coe, you’ll find Scotland like you imagined it: with Mountains that turn into soft valleys of grass, where rivers float through and the color scheme is made of nothing but sand and nude and brown. A dream, really.

Away from nature and into the cities

But next to the breathtaking nature, where we spent most of our time, we also enjoyed visiting the cities. We stayed in Oban, Fort William, Inverness and Aberdeen and liked all of these towns, the beautiful hotels and all the friendly people. But the most beautiful city of them all is, of course, Edinburgh! It is an old, characteristic and magical city that is still young and modern. We really enjoyed it and will have to come back for more, soon!

Do you know Scotland? Have you already been there and fallen in love with it, too? We’re really looking forward to your comments!

PS.: Scotland is, of course, the only country where you are allowed to wear check as excessively – logically, right?!
